Children's Aviation Book for Sale at Sugar Valley

From pilot and author, Jeff Kennon:

Big News!

My book, The Day I Learned to Fly is now going to be available for children at Sugar Valley Airport (5NC2 ).(

Though I learned to fly using my imagination when I was a child, I earned my Private Pilot License at Sugar Valley. If you've never flown in, they would love to have a visit from you. Every fall they have a major Fly-In. It's worth the trip.

Don't forget, Christmas is just around the corner, and for those kids who dream of flying (… and what kids don’t), this would make a great gift.(

Thank you Susan  Baggett for your willingness to use my book!

Pup in a Pitts

Earlier this week, I was in need of some more photos of Turbo doing fun aviation things to promote the Turbo the Flying Dog book series. We had recently purchased him some "doggles" upon the suggestion of many of his fans to make him look the part. His fancy pair of doggles are a bright yellow, so I thought what better than to do a photoshoot of him in my boss' yellow Pitts with black stripes. Without further ado, here are some snippets of the awesome shoot:

Oh! A Crosswind!

After work yesterday, I took the company Cessna 172 up for a quick hop around the pattern and a circle over our house. Bob sat beside me and Turbo slept in the back. Yes, the moment the Mutt Muffs went on, Turbo was snoring. Thanks for your support, pup!
This is just your friendly reminder that there are things called "crosswinds" up there in the air. As a commercial instrument pilot, these had completely left my mind and I kept overshooting my base to final because of them. Be aware of the wind my friends!

Other than that, it was an enjoyable half hour sunset flight! Here are some photos.

Sunset Fall Food Flight

After a weekend of fall themed activities to include corn mazes, pumpkin chucking and pumpkin picking, it was about time for a fall flight! It was super windy all weekend, but Sunday evening the winds started to calm down and Bob and I in the Glasair, along with our friends Tara and Kyle in an RV4 took off into the sunset. We departed to KLNS for a quick 52nm hop for dinner at Fiorintino's - complete with hot cider! The pictures do not do this beautiful fall evening justice!
I'm hungry. Let's do this!

Turbo the Flying Dog to star in children's book

Turbo the Flying Dog to star in children's book

By Kelsi Loos News-Post Staff | Posted: Sunday, October 19, 2014 2:00 am
A Frederick author hopes a children's book series based on the adventures of her "co-pilot" dog will take off.

Victoria Zajko and co-author Kelly Kennedy have written a story based on Zajko's pet, Turbo the Flying Dog, set to come out in December.

Turbo has accompanied Zajko on flights as far north as Ottawa, Ontario, and as far south as the Bahamas. Zajko estimated Turbo has more than 50 flight hours logged. He even flew home from the West Virginia rescue where Zajko adopted him.
"It just seemed perfect. We called him from the get-go ... Turbo the Flying Dog," Zajko said. "It just fit to do a series."

Renter’s Insurance Made Easier

Yes! Here is some shameless advertising for my work. Many of my aviating friends in the social media world rent aircraft and have purchased renter's (non-owned aircraft) insurance through me. Below is a new announcement from Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR) how you can now shop, purchase and start your coverage online through our website! Check out the announcement below and if you do decide to purchase non-owned aircraft insurance through AIR online (which you totally should) feel free to put my name in the "Flight School" line along with your flight school if you wish me to be your agent. :)

A Surprise Flying Date

Sometimes I have to admit, as much as I love to rag on him, Bob is pretty awesome. Tuesday evening he had a surprise for me. In typical Bobtoria fashion, it involved flying. After work, I met Bob at the airport and had the doors open of the hangar as he pulled up in his car then pulled out the plane. After topping of the tanks we departed into the clear sky. We headed northeast, but I was still clueless as to where we were going. Bob made sure I saw nothing on the GPS, and I flew keeping heading and trying to guess what was going on!

Help Vegas Adventure Flights become a reality!

Meet private pilot and future sport pilot instructor, Mike Daniels. I've recently have been assisting Mike with insurance quotations for his current business endeavor, an LSA aviation center in Las Vegas. We all know that the best way to make a small fortune in aviation is to start with a large one. Sometimes we just need a bit of a boost! Just like I am raising funds to publish the Turbo the Flying Dog series, Mike is using a crowdfunding platform to make his dream of running an LSA center come true!

Airplane Dog Bed!

I've shared photos on social media of Turbo's new airplane dog bed and many have asked where I got it. I thought I'd share that with you here. After searching far and wide, I finally found a decently priced one on Note, it is shipped from China so will take awhile to arrive. The come in brown and yellow, pink, and red and blue. They are good for small to medium dogs. It's perfect for Turbo who is 20lbs, but any bigger and he would not fit. Here is the link! Also, the Turbo the Flying Dog campaign is at 76% with 26 days to go! If you would like a pawtographed copy of his book, it's only a $30 donation over at Kickstarter.

Record-setting aviatrix Jerrie Mock dies

Jill W. Tallman | AOPA Technical Editor, AOPA

AOPA Technical Editor Jill W. Tallman is an instrument-rated private pilot who owns a Piper Cherokee 140.
Geraldine “Jerrie” Mock, who in 1964 became the first woman to fly solo around the world, died Sept. 30 at her home in Quincy, Florida, according to news reports. She was 88.
Mock accomplished the feat that Amelia Earhart set out to achieve in 1937. She planned the 29-day flight in the basement of her home in Port Columbus, Ohio. She flew the route in a Cessna 180, The Spirit of Columbus, which had a new 225-horsepower engine and was modified to carry 178 gallons of fuel.
“Jerrie had what all pilots do: an amazing passion for aviation,” said Victoria Neuville Zajko of Frederick, Maryland. “But what made her special is she didn’t think she did anything all that extraordinary. She truly believed that any female pilot could fly solo around the world. That's what made her a truly remarkable role model."

SMAC081 – Reducing Risk in Aviation & Flying around Iceland

For episode 81's main topic, Carl reads an email from a listener about mitigating safety problems in General Aviation. The group discussed various safety issues, different types of aircraft and the mitigating circumstances. Victoria also discussed some of the issues related to different planes and insurance rates, and the whole group discussed seat restraints and how they use them. 30% of GA deaths are a result of head injuries which could possibly be prevented by using restraints.

Oftentimes kids find comfort in animal characters when learning about life. Stuart Little, Winnie the Pooh, Clifford the Big Red Dog, and many others each face adventures through which children can see life issues played out: the first day of school, a fight with a friend, lying.

Turbo is a new character for kids making his debut the 2014 holiday season in Turbo the Flying Dog by Kelly Kennedy and Victoria Zajko, and illustrated by Michelle Zajko.
