Back in the air-No longer a passenger

This weekend there was a reunion for a young adult church group I used to be very involved with back in Michigan. I was excited for the good flying weather as I have served mostly as a passenger for the last few months. While I had taken the controls, I had yet to do a landing during that period of time. There was always an excuse or a reason (dog on lap, falling asleep, I don't know how to land a tailwheel...etc) but this weekend I declared "I'm doing it darnnit!" And I did.

The FAA Happy Dance

It has been two months since I submitted my paperwork to renew my special issuance medical that had lapsed. I completely expected to wait on hold again and to just be told it wasn't ready yet. Amazingly, I got through right away and they said it was mailed out to me this morning! The super nice gentleman on the line even told me to do the happy dance! So, insert "happy dance" here.

I love working with pilots every day!

For a long time I was focused on the goal of becoming a professional pilot, but life experiences and various steps had slowly brought me to the decision that while I love to fly, I would not love flying for a living. But, I still wanted to work in aviation! When I started working at Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR) it was just a job. Now, I am happy to say I have a career where I talk to people that share the same passions that I do on a daily basis!

Why The Pixie Pilot?

A model flips her long locks in the wind. A bride has a gorgeous up do. A lady shouts "yes" in the shower while lathering her shoulder length hair. Society says the epitome of femininity is long, shiny hair.  At first when I joined the ranks of pixie cut women, I teared up, feeling that my femininity was lost. Later I learned that I had gained so much more. My face was no longer hidden from the world. I'm a pilot and I have a pixie cut.

Toriaflies is now The Pixie Pilot!

Excuse the mess. Let me know your thoughts. More on the big change later!

A Flight to the Latrobe Airshow

I didn't even get offered a seat-but Turbo did!
The Westmoreland County Airport (KLBE) in Latrobe, PA drew in a huge crowd for their 2014 airshow this Saturday. Part of that crowd included Bob, Turbo the Flying Dog and myself. The show would conclude with a demonstration by the Navy's Blue Angels. This would be the only time they would be in the area this year, and it felt like all of Pennsylvania turned out for it! Also performing were the GEICO Skytypers, the Golden Knights, the Raiders Demo Team, Matt Chapman, Andrew McKenna and (my favorite) Jacquie B Airshows.

To lady pilots changing their name when they get married:

it is not a huge ordeal except for the fact you have to go to your local FSDO in person to do so. However,

I'm back!

Hi all! My apologies for my absence as of late. Not much (GA) flying has been happening as I was in the process of saving cash and prepping for a whirlwind trip through Peru with two of my girlfriends.
